SpongeBob and SPECIAL work together!Thanks to Nickelodeon and Aquario di GenovaSpongeBob is the cartoon ocean ambassador for millions of kids throughout the globe. That's why it was chosen to celebrate the World Ocean's Day on June 8th, also launching a cooperation between Nickelodeon (the international kids' channel) and Aquario di Genova (one of the largest European aquaria). The event, attended by hundreds of children and broadcasted all over the world, was also the moment to introduce SongeFriends, a sponge culture project grounded on the achievements that are being obtained thanks to SPECIAL's WP3. Supported by Nickelodeon, SpongeFriends will expand the purpose of sponge culture beyond the bulk production of sponge biomass, as a means to facilitate the establishment of a complex and biodiverse community on underwater man-made structures. The project will focus on Chondrilla nucula and Chondrosia reniformis, the two target species addressed by SPECIAL's WP3, and will see the cooperation of the Municipality of Alassio, Reef Check Italia onlus, GAIA, the Center for Environmental Education of Imperia.
