National Research Center for Geoanalysis, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences - ChinaTeam leader: Prof. Dr. Xiaohong WangAs one of the ten national analysis centers belonging to the Ministry of Science and Technology, P. R. China, NRCGA is the leading institute in China for geoanalysis science. The research activities include the development of new analytical techniques and the preparation of geological reference materials. In addition, they include ocean geochemistry and new material studies. X.H. Wang and her team are experts in the physicochemical characterisation of biomaterials. They are experienced in: 1) Modern techniques (SEM, AFM) to study the micro-structure and surface characteristics of spicules and of other biosilica-containing structures, 2) in-situ micro-probe techniques (LA-ICP-MS, EPMA) to study the element distributions across sections of sponge spicules and of other biosilica-containing structures, 3) Nano-SIMS to study the isotopic distributions (e.g. in sections of spicules), 4) Methods to study the mechanical properties (bending and hardness) of sponge spicules.
