University of the Azores - PortugalTeam leader: Prof. Ana C. CostaFounded in 1976 and located 1500 km off the closest continental landmass, on the archipelago of the Azores, the University of the Azores constitutes the westernmost European University. The University has its main campus in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel Island) but possesses two other campuses at Terceira and Faial islands. The remoteness, geologic history and oceanographic conditions make of these oceanic islands an area of international research interest enhanced by a particularly privileged setting for underwater explorations. Furthermore the UAzores hosts a satellite group (to which the team members belong) of the CIBIO – Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, a centre of excellence which conducts basic and applied research on the three main components of biodiversity: genes, species and ecosystems. It thus integrates experts in complementary fields such as molecular and population genetics, phylogeography, population biology, immunogenetics, taxonomy, ecology, landscape management and conservation.
